Default [Solved] Avast Can't scan Gmail

Email Client is Thunderbird, but all clients have the same issue;
how to get Avast! to scan incomming Gmail/pop email?
The typical GMAIL access is
pop3 server=pop.gmail.com on port 995 using SSL
smtp server=smtp.gmail.com on port 465 (or 587) using TLS
Avast! properly scans all email providers using ports pop3/110 and smtp/25.

BUT how to scan Gmail?

There's a complex solution using SSL & STUNNEL ... [solution below]

Anything else you know of??

Can't you just disable SSL through thunderbird so that avast can locally intercept it and create it's own secure connection instead?

it's not Thunderbird; it's the gmail pop server access REQUIRES SSL

I understand now.

Apparently Avast! v5 (coming soon) will use the OpenSSL library - which I am guessing will be similar to what you referred to in your link about Stunnel. Surely they will make it user friendly.

==========================

For the meantime I would check out - FreePops.org - which specializes only in the receiving of mail, it does not support sending of mail - it assumes you will use standard SMTP services.

Instructions Specific to Avast!

It says to change the port in your mail client to 110 (guessing that may not work, but worth a shot) I am thinking the program is going to download the SSL encrypted email, then decrypt it, then Avast can scan it and pass it along to your client.

Then for outgoing mail - can you disable TLS and change the port to 25?

Maybe ask how it could be done on their english forums -> http://freepops.diludovico.it/forumdisplay.php?f=13

I think they are at least on the right track for solving this issue

[under investigation ... jobeard]

Very nice -- works as advertised

Install instructions are very sparse, so here's what I did:
First, install the download (using Admin account)
Find the install location (C:\Program Files\FreePOPs)
get a command prompt (run -> cmd) and enter
C:\Program Files>"C:\Program Files\FreePOPs\freepopsservice.exe" install -w -p20110
This creates the SERVICE on port 20110 and then
you config Thunderbird to access the standard port 110
server name 127.0.0.1
user name xyz @ gmail.com
and be sure to select NEVER[x] use secure connection
(this is applied between TB and the FreePop service only )

Default secondary issue; Yahoo mail

FreePOPs will give your PC email client access to the Yahoo POP3 server

However, it never seems to delete the messages once downloaded to the PC:

[Solved]
using an Admin login
save the yahoo.lua attachment
copy it to \Program Files\FreePOPs\LUA and
FreePOPs\LUA_UPDATES

Stop your email client
Stop the FreePOPs servce
restart the service
relaunch your email client
[/solved]

Just wanted to update this that Avast 5 is now out - haven't tested if it in fact does use the OpenSSL library

but you may want to check it out

It appears that Avast 5 does work as I just got this message:

Just wondering if you were able to get it working correctly?
