| I have had a problem with my Windows Live Messenger for a while now. As it hasn't been constant I haven't worried too much about it but it is becoming increasingly irritating. I have windows XP and version 2008 (Build 8.5.1302.1018) of live messenger. My problem is that I could talk on msn all evening and then just as I say goodnight to someone msn freezes. The rest of my pc is running just fine. Firefox isn't frozen at that time, just msn. So I open up the task manager and close it down. The CPU usage goes high at this time and as soon as that goes low again, then msn closes and I can restart it. MSN might do this about 3 times before I can finish a conversation. If I try to write a long reply then it seems even more likely to freeze half way. It does occasionally do this earlier in the day (it did it once this afternoon) but as I mostly use MSN in the evenings then that is when i notice it. I would say this happens several times each week. I have avira anti virus and zone alarm firewall, both are always kept up to date and Avira scans are run daily. I also use spybot and a scan is run once a week with that. Win patrol is also running constantly. Has anyone got any suggestions to stop this irritating problem, please? |

| Thank you for moving my post to the correct forum ![]() I have completed my system specs in the control panel. I hope I have put the right things in the right places. These are the things that there wasn't a space for in the system specifications: Firefox Version 3.0.11 Internet Explorer Version 7.0.5730.11 live messenger version 2008 (Build 8.5.1302.1018) Meanwhile, I have also downloaded CCleaner and run that. I was talking on MSN last night and it didn't freeze but only time will tell if that cleaned up anything. I'm not exactly sure what CCleaner is but hopefully it wasn't harmful  |

| Hi Welcome to Tech-101 : Thumbup : CCleaner is an application used to clear up system and application files and junk. Its used to remove unnecessary files that you create through the day to day running of your PC. I think its a very good program and wont do you any harm. In fact i would say to run it ma be every 3-4 weeks to clean your system. However i would advise against running the registry cleaner so often as that can cause harm if miss used. Its possible, unlikely but possible that you have cleaned a file that was somehow causing an application error with Windows Live. I'm not sure what however. If it happens again i would probably say try and uninstall re clean and then install again. It worked for me the last bout of problem i had. There is another avenue i would also like to check if you don't mind. Please can you download and install Everest from HERE Once its installed (leave all of the options just keep pressing next) double click on the shortcut. Then once its running: 1: In left pane expand Computer folder. 2: Click once on Summary 3: In upper menu, go Report 4: And then to Quick Report-Summary 5: Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post Don't include anything under the line "DEBUG- PCI" The image below corresponds to the numbers in the list above if you are struggling to find areas. | Thanks Carol. These are just shots in the dark to try and test for an lapses that my occur to cause the fault. Even if it does not solve it it will benefit your machine. 1, Please Go Here and update Directx. Click to download the updater tool that will run and check for the latest version and any patch releases. This has been know to cause problems with MSN and Windows live. 2, Also can you check your Java Version. Click This Link to test your current Java status by clicking Free Java Download. Again this has been known to cause issues with both IM programs. Make sure you test Windows Live after DirectX to see if its made a difference and if not check again after Java. It would be nice to know which if any solved the issue.

| Update. Well, msn froze again twice last night when I was using it so CCleaner hasn't doesn't the trick unfortunately. I downloaded the directX thing today and then I couldn't find wherever it had gone to on my pc  Also a box kept opening and everything seemed odd, so I did a system restore as I couldn't find the directx thing to uninstall it or use it. (I did look in the add/remove programs, maybe it comes under a different name?) Having done a system restore I decided to try the second option and check my java was up to date. I had Java 6 update 13 instead of 14. So I will see how it goes now. Another thought I had was that I use stuffPlug 3. I think this enables me to open my hotmail email from the MSN contacts list and it opens in firefox instead of IE. I could live without this if anyone thinks it could be causing a problem. Although I have had it installed for much longer than I have had the freezing problem, so I am just grasping at straws. |

| you have dx9.0(c) - which is has high a version you can get for xp you also have quite an old build of live messenger - may need an update (have you check microsoft update recently?) Current Stable Release: (Build 14.0.8064.206) / 2009-02-12; 5 months ago ================================================== === With that being said lets look what loading and running on there: RSIT Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from HERE and save it to your Desktop.

| Thank you, Justin. I'm just about to update my version of msn.
