Default New notebook affected, followed instructions, please help

Like so many others, I am experiencing the Vimax ads problem. I read on another forum that you guys might be able to help me solve this.

The ads themselves are not what worries me, I'm sure I could find a way to block them... it's the Google redirects, and the invisible forces that seem to prevent me from installing certain software, and the fact that I cannot update Windows Service Packs, things like that.

Case in point. In trying to download the programs in your prerequisite thread, both IE and Google Chrome told me every link was broken... I was only able to download the programs from CNET.com.

Also, I cannot update Malwarebytes (or anything else that requires an internet connection for that matter), I'm given an error code when I try to do so.

This is a brand new notebook and I am really concerned about this issue, please help!! Thank you so much

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Link 2

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.

When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please copy and paste the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a HijackThis log into your next post so we can continue cleaning the system.

I really want to get started on this, but unfortunately Combofix won't run on my OS-- or so it says. I know others have gotten Combofix to work on Vista but everytime I try to run it, it says "Incompatible OS. Combofix only works for 2000 and XP."

I tried runnning it after disabling UAC but it made no difference.

I did the renaming when I saved it so that's not the issue.

Could this be related to the malware?

I posted a HijackThis log in my first post but I've posted another one here.

I'm running Vista OS 64-Bit as it came preinstalled on this system.

64 bit may be a bit tricky.

Lets try this, if that doesn't work then I have another few tricks up my sleeve.

Download avz4.zip from here
  • Unzip it to your desktop to a folder named avz4[/*:m:16gzuela]
  • Double click on AVZ.exe to run it.[/*:m:16gzuela]
  • Run an update by clicking the Auto Update button on the Right of the Log window: [/*:m:16gzuela]
  • Click Start to begin the update[/*:m:16gzuela]
Note: If you recieve an error message, chose a different source, then click Start again
  • After the update, from the "File" menu, choose "Standard Scripts"[/*:m:16gzuela]
  • Put a check next to item 2: Advanced System Investigation[/*:m:16gzuela]
  • Click Execute selected scripts[/*:m:16gzuela]
  • At the next prompt, click the OK button[/*:m:16gzuela]
  • Let the scan run and click "OK" when the completion prompt pops up[/*:m:16gzuela]
  • Now Close out of the Standard Scripts window, and exit AVZ[/*:m:16gzuela]
  • Navigate to the avz4 folder and locate the folder LOG[/*:m:16gzuela]
  • Inside the LOG folder you will find virusinfo_syscheck.htm and virusinfo_syscheck.zip[/*:m:16gzuela]
  • Attach the Compressed file, virusinfo_syscheck.zip, to your next reply, [/*:m:16gzuela]

Okay, I was finally able to do this. Just to let you know, none of my browsers would let me access the file through the link you provided (not in Safe Mode either).

This has been a problem with many links to antivirus/antispyware utilities... I am almost positive that has to do with the problems on my system.

Nevertheless, after much scouring I was able to find a link that worked for me and followed the instructions, the log file is attached.

Malware Bytes found some items but
No action taken.
due to missing configuration settings.

relaunch it, set options for at least quarantine

I went into Malwarebytes and clicked the Settings tab and found everything was checked except for "Delete Internet Explorer during removal." There doesn't appear to be any option for "At least quarantine."

That may be because my definitions are outdated, but I cannot update them because the DNS changer or whatever is going on here won't let me update Malwarebytes, Windows Defender, or... pretty much anything.
