HP computer
Windows XP - not sure what version

I am fixing a system for a friend. Their computer gets stuck at the windows splash screen, the bar goes like it is loading then freezes, and the lights on the keyboard go off.

I tried booting to safe mode - same thing happens

I tried booting from windows CD - it wont boot from the cd - I tried changing boot sequence in BIOS and accessing the boot menu through shortcut key. CD light comes on for a sec then it tries to boot from the harddrive anyway.

Also note: When I first turn on the system, the keyboard lights take longer than they should to come on and it sits for a while at the HP splash screen where you can pick BIOS, System Recovery, ect.

System Recovery did not work either - it ran then tried to boot windows and same thing happened.

Any ideas?

Clarification: it freezes vs powers off? suspect low or nearly dead battery?

Booting Safe Mode: do you get to the Selection of SM? I recall the splash occurs prior to the choices ...

1) It freezes - does not power off - and it will sit like that all night.

2) When selecting safe mode it goes down the list and shows the drivers/system files that it's loading and freezes on there instead of the splash screen

Sounds like hardware to me.

Get the names of the last three items loaded and reply; I'll compare to mine and see if that leads to anything.
