Verizon LTE Down Nationwide

Today a nationwide outage of LTE networks is hitting the USA and Verizon has been vocal about being on the case with a fix as soon as possible. If you’re experiencing dataloss in Houson, Dallas, Memphis, greater California, and New York City, you’re not alone, though you are unique if you’re not able to access 3G data, as Verizon has also noted that all 3G services are operating as they ought to be.

so says Slashgear.com in this article

A comment on that article is also critical of the "3g services are normal" statement.

DrBenji notes:

Everyone freaking knows LTE phones are unable to connect to 3G when the 4G network goes down--we all get stuck on 1X. So do 3G phones operate properly, no hopping down to 1X? Is that what allows them to claim their 3G network is operating normally? Because for 4G customers, we know 3G is borked too when 4G goes down.

Yep; there are such things and they allow a third party to scan / inspect SSL encrypted session data.
OUCH! Very draconian! The NetworkWorld.com article states:

Mozilla plans to ask all certificate authorities to review their subordinate CA certificates and revoke those that could be used by companies to inspect SSL-encrypted traffic for domain names they don't control.

The plan, whose details are still being worked out, is Mozilla's response to Trustwave's recent claim that the use of such certificates for SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) traffic management within corporate networks is a common practice.

... anyone caught with such a certificate would have their root key removed from Mozilla's products and all certificates they ever signed would result in an error when opened in the browser.

What is a 'short url' and their associated risk?

The WIKI on the subject states:

URL shortening is a technique on the World Wide Web in which a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) may be made substantially shorter in length and still direct to the required page. This is achieved by using an HTTP Redirect on a domain name that is short, which links to the web page that has a long URL. For example, the URL http://en.wikipedia..../URL_shortening can be shortened to http://bit.ly/urlwiki or http://tinyurl.com/urlwiki. This is especially convenient for messaging technologies such as Twitter and Identi.ca, which severely limit the number of characters that may be used in a message. Short URLs allow otherwise long web addresses to be referred to in a tweet.

see http://en.wikipedia..../URL_shortening

In the example, one can clearly read the url and know it will take you to the wikipedia.org site.
The shorten form is unreadable (can't be understood).

So what you ask? Being unreadable means when you click on it, you have no assurity that you
will go where YOU intend, and thus can easily fall prey to a phishing scam and access some infected content. The HTTP Redirect can be deadly!

How does mobile device management (MDM) work?

MdM: Meeting mobile IT's need for securing apps, policies and permissions across the multi-OS smart device enterprise.

How, for example, will IT ensure corporate intellectual property remains intact? Who has responsibility for updating, distributing and securing mobile apps being developed by various departments and/or geographic divisions? How do enterprises gain an acceptable balance of security and corporate resource-access across all of the leading mobile platforms (Android, BlackBerry, iOS and Windows Phone)?

Four Phases:

1) Phase 1 focuses on provisioning, during which devices "inherit" an enterprise persona, ... This phase includes leveraging all existing corporate network infrastructure to help avoid resource complexity and duplication. BYOD has many complex and hidden implications ..

2) Phase 2 involves the mobile IT team actively managing all devices -- phones, tablets, iPod Touches, etc.

3) Phase 3 is app management, including when the user leaves the company, the mobile IT group uses MDM to simply remove the enterprise, personal and all accompanying permissions to protect their intellectual property. MDM software accomplishes this task on employee devices (BYOD) by means of a selective wipe, ensuring that no pictures, music or other non-work files are removed. For corporate-liable devices, MDM software offers a complete wipe and device "retirement" before it can be re-enabled for a new user.

4) Continuous MDM software life cycle has users limiting their costly mobile service plan overages with the help of MDM software application programming interfaces (APIs) designed to detect and reduce international plan overages.
