Default Slow Running Laptop #2

Acer Aspire 5630 Laptop
Vista Home Premium

I am experiencing performance difficulties with my laptop, this past
week ...

First, i had my contact list emptied in my hotmail email account (think i
have managed to repopulate my account and solve this).

Then, Vista was having trouble updating 4 automatic windows updates.

So, i followed the error codes, and took the best advice i could find,
by making alterations to the services. Finally i was advised to turn on
ALL Microsoft services. Updates were successful, but ...

This has caused my system to go real slow - it was already overworked
by 60+ processes (i cant figure out anymore what is what!).

On top of this, since i use a USB Modem to access internet, i am having great difficulty getting online, and often, when i finally do, i lose my connection.

I have now made so many changes to the services, and not understanding what all do, i need some advice on what services i actually need, or at least which i could perhaps turn off to improve performace. (All restore points have disappeared too!).

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, you guys must be sick of me
coming back here so often. Cheers

scotsteve.

ps. See attached services list.

You always keep us on our toes!

I want to get a better idea of what is running and whats causing it to go so slowly.
So I need the following from you please. As per usual if you need any help then let me know.

Once its installed (leave all of the options just keep pressing next) double click on the shortcut.
Then once its running:
1: In left pane expand Computer folder.
2: Click once on Summary
3: In upper menu, go Report
4: And then to Quick Report-Summary
5: Save it in text file, and attach it to your next post

Don't include anything under the line "DEBUG- PCI"

The attached picture can be used for reference

Under Select type to list, select:
  • Critical (Vista only)
  • Error
  • Click the radio button for Number of events
  • Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box

There is allot there but this is going to give men a thorough analysis form all angles. So take you time making sure its right . Once I get all the logs we will strat of by cleaning the system and then link that with a few removal items to make sure everything is going well.

I didnt quite understand the following line ...

Don't include anything under the line "DEBUG- PCI"
(relating to Everest!)

Nor did i understands the latest comment from jobeard ... "to assist analysis of services"

By the way, the issue i have had relating to my internet dropping out, i should have
realised straight away! - i had reached my download limit - so that problem is gone now!

Cheers

Hi,

You can ignore that area of the Everest instructions. That's only if you are copying and pasting to the forum, and I keep forgetting to remove it. Sorry about that

I will get back to you tomorrow regarding what we can do.
I've had a quick look and expected to find alot more than I do. There are very few start-up areas to improve, which is surprising.

There are a fair few services we can look at. There is one: SpyHunter3 which I have some concerns about. As far as I can remember, and if someone form the malware team is reading will hopefully confirm this is/once was rouge antispyware software which probably should be removed.

Also I think we may have some hardware issues.
I checked your VEW log and there are a few power failure results in there and a possible hard drive issue relating it:
Log: 'System' Date/Time: 03/04/2010 11:22:58
Type: Error Category: 0
Event: 7 Source: disk
The device, \Device\Harddisk0\DR0, has a bad block.

However lets try and do a spot of maintenance first.

CCleaner
  • Download from HERE
  • Close all browsers.
  • Run the program and make sure all the boxes are ticked under the Windows and Applications tabs, Also check All Advanced tabs(except for the Old prefetch Data option, this should be unticked)
  • Click the run cleaner button.

Once you have done that:
  • Click the Tools button
  • Click the Uninstall button
  • Click the Save to text file button (bottom right)
  • Save the log and attach it to your next post.

I will be able to give you some better instructions after a more thorough go over.

Hi,

Can you give me any more details on this area:
Quote:
Then, Vista was having trouble updating 4 automatic windows updates.

So, i followed the error codes, and took the best advice i could find,
by making alterations to the services
Can you tell me:
  1. What the 4 updates were? (if you can't remember go to Start > Control Panel > Windows Update > View update history)
  2. Was one of them by chance Vista service pack 1?
  3. If so did you still have your antivirus running?
  4. Where you got the advice form to alter services?

I am trying to find a reason at this moment why you have the processes but not the programs creating them.
I mean normal people have things like Apple startups, Java startups etc but you have very few.
In fact the only one I would maybe disable is the sidebar but that shouldn't create such a backlog.

Thanks

The 4 updates were ...

1 Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.85.532.0)
2 Security Update for Windows Vista (KB979683)
3 Update for Microsoft Silverlight (KB982926)
4 Security Update for Microsoft Excel 2002 (KB982299)

Those were successful, (as was Office Live add-in 1.5)

But, Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (KB936330), attempted to install, but,
didnt. (All efforts to instal service packs on this ex display laptop has failed,
this has been previously discussed).
