Default recommendation?

Ok, it's time to abandon old IE6 and jump forward -- but to which: IE7 vs IE8 ?

System is XP/Pro with SP2; I see no need to add SP3

Your experience(s)?

TIA, Jeff

Firefox! Either of the 2 versions out.

But if you insist on IE, you might give this another read first: IE8 - What Are They Thinking?

I understand; My primary browser is FF (just moved to 3.5.3 too ) BUT ---

IE* is necessary for those @#$%^ websites that only support IE as well as
update.microsoft.com

SO, if I *must* have IE*, which is 'tolerable' -- defined as least pain and upset to the system?

I would be inclined to go with IE7.
There have been some big big isues with IE 8 both in installation and in runtime so it seems rocky.
There is good support as a browser in a whole with IE8 but it just doesn't seem the hassle. I know 1 day you will need to go with IE8 but for now I would stay with 7.
My old Dell was left incapacitated by IE8 because the install just corrupted and stalled part way through damaging the core system. I know that's unlikely in all systems but it did happen to me .

If you want tabbed browsing for IE, go with IE7.

Why?
If you don't need the tabs and that isn't an issue, why change at all? Why not keep IE6? I get by just fine with that.

I am running xp home, sp3, on a ~5yearold Gateway laptop.
I upgraded to IE8 without difficulty.
I use it so little that I cannot comment on any differences as compared to earlier versions.
As you know ... ymmv.
